The Couples Weekend offers the chance to rekindle warmth. Join us for this intense 3-day couples therapy workshop in Chapel Hill, NC.

This is a powerful weekend couples therapy workshop! If you are tired of fighting with each other and wondering if you will ever overcome your difficulties, this workshop is for you. If you feel your relationship is strong, and you could use some tools to fulfill your potential together, this workshop is also for you. If you are wondering how you will ever weekly therapy hours into your schedule, this workshop is for you. 

Relationships are hard, they don’t have to be a struggle. At their best, they are not only a source of safety and strength, they inspire us. This three-day couples therapy workshop is designed to help couples make changes, personally and relationship, in order to craft a fulfilling life together.

Information from redecision therapy, family systems, family sculpting, attachment theory, and other approaches will be used to help couples increase their awareness, autonomy, spontaneity, and capacity for intimacy. The co-therapist team works together to help you identify and change the core issues that keep you and your partner locked in negative cycles. They will also you guide you through what to do instead of arguing. Couples often accomplish as much in this weekend as in a year of weekly therapy. Join us for a fun and productive weekend couples therapy experience.

Couples Therapy Training: We also accept up to two therapists who want to observe in order to learn this process. The couples co-therapists will meet with you periodically during the weekend to discuss theory and techniques you have observed. Dr. Joines is a Clinical Member and Approved Supervisor, American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy

For Therapists–Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the different escape hatches in couples’ relationships.
  • Explain what is required and what is desired for intimacy.
  • Describe the difference between target strokes and target discounts.
  • List the four basic emotions and explain how emotional literacy is beneficial to couples.
  • Describe the benefits of a co-therapist team in doing couples therapy.
  • Explain the connection between early attachment relationships and romantic relationships.
  • List and describe four different attachment styles.
  • Define “attachment longings.”
  • Explain how a partner’s attempts to connect to his or her spouse will often push that person further away.
  • State John Gottman’s “magic ratio.”
  • Describe the role of the “initiator” in Pete Pearson and Ellyn Bader’s I to I process of communication.
  • Describe the role of the “inquirer” in Pete Pearson and Ellyn Bader’s I to I process of communication.
  • Explain the importance of “putting oneself in the other’s shoes” toward the end of the I to I process of communication.
  • List three attributes of conflictual communication patterns.
  • List three attributes of open communication patterns.
  • Describe three defense mechanisms that people may use to avoid vulnerable communication.
  • List the steps in Virginia Satir’s family sculpting process.
  • Describe how couples’ family sculpts interlock
  • List three benefits to group couple’s therapy.
  • List three obstacles to group couple’s therapy.
  • List 5 elements of contracting for safety in group couples therapy.
  • Describe the stages in the developmental model of couples therapy

    TUITION:   Couples: $900 per couple if registered one month in advance ($950 afterward) Retake this Workshop for $200 off per couple
    Therapist: $400 if registered one month in advance, $100 deposit ($425 afterward)
