Southeast Institute for Group and Family Therapy is a charitable nonprofit, non-stock educational corporation and is committed to the principle of equal opportunity and affirmative action. The Southeast Institute for Group and Family Therapy began in 1969 as a nonprofit educational institute called the Fellowship for Racial and Economic Equality. Its goal was to promote racial and economic justice in America. By 1971 training was being offered in transactional analysis and creative group problem-solving for professionals to confront social problems as well as improve their skill as psychotherapists. A primary focus was training faculty and counselors from traditionally Afro-American colleges throughout the South.

In 1974, the Fellowship made Chapel Hill, NC its home and the name Southeast Institute was chosen to reflect an expanded focus. Shortly after this move, an experimental Mast of Arts program in Psychotherapy and social change was launched. 22 students were graduated. In 1975, Due to a shortage of grant money ton continue a graduate program, the Institute began to focus primarily on continuing education training and supervision for mental health professionals.

An annual Spring Conference of the Southeast Institute was held from 1974 to the mid 1980's with 300 - 1000 people attending each year. In 1977, the annual Eric Berne Lectures on Social Psychotherapy were inaugurated with a lecture by Gregory Bateson, Ph.D. In 1999, the Institute celebrated its 30th year. A special conference was held in the Spring of 2000 to celebrate this event. Over the years, the Southeast Institute has earned respect and recognition for its excellence of training and for its continued commitment to developing effective models for individual and social change.

This training allows the mental health professional to stay abreast of the latest developments in the practice of psychotherapy as well as to fulfill one's continuing education requirements for licensing.

The Southeast Institute for Group and Family Therapy is a postgraduate educational institute offering training for mental health professionals in individual, group, couple, and family psychotherapy. We offer weekend and week-long workshops as well as on-going training programs. The primary approach we use is Redecision Therapy which is an integration of Transactional Analysis and Gestalt Therapy. We also teach an integrated approach to Couple and Family Therapy, Body Centered Psychotherapy, Hypnotherapy, Transactional Analysis, Gestalt, Object Relations, Personality Adaptations and Energy Psychology. Our training can be used for certification in the International Transactional Analysis Association, the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, the American Group Psychotherapy Association, or for continuing education credits.
