Other Resident Faculty

Gary Peterson, M.D., a resident faculty member and psychiatrist in independent clinical practice at the Southeast Institute for Group and Family Therapy where he provides professional training, case consultation and individual, couples and family psychotherapy. He has an eclectic style addressing the needs of his patients, many of whom have symptoms of anxiety, depression, ADHD and eating problems. He has a special interest and experience working with complex trauma and dissociation, EMDR, and energy psychotherapies. He is board certified in both psychiatry and child psychiatry. A graduate of the US Air Force Academy and the University of South Florida College of Medicine, he has held various faculty appointments for many years at UNC Chapel Hill in psychiatry, psychology, and at the Center for Developmental Science and Research, with previous appointments in psychiatry at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, and the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute. He has published on dissociative disorders, particularly in children, and frequently consults, trains, and supervises on related topics. He cofounded the North Carolina Triangle Society for the Study of Dissociation, served as liaison to the Dissociative Disorders Work Group for APA Task Force on DSM-IV, and receives frequent accolades for his work, including Best Doctors of America, the Distinguished Achievement Award and the President’s Award of Distinction by the International Society for the Study of Dissociation. Hi is author of Energy Healing in Psychotherapy: a clinician’s desktop handbook (Southeast Institute, 2006).

Balancing, centering, and calming is often the initial focus in our therapy. People come for relief of tension issues, mood and impulse problems and body sensation struggles. The treatment frame is often from a developmental perspective. Overreactive triggering experiences can be addressed through developing self-soothing skills and by weakening the early foundations of currently disturbing reactions.

To set up an intake appointment, you can call 919-929-1171, and we will have a brief phone conversation to confirm a good fit between your requirements and my skills. If you are currently in therapy, we will coordinate the initial treatment plan with your therapist. You will be asked to request that your therapist contact me so that I can find out how my services will fit into the treatment plan.

For over 20 years I have been treating patients experiencing a wide variety of issues and teaching groundbreaking psychotherapy methods to clinicians. This rustic setting is in the hills of Edwards Mountain just north of the Governors Club at a few miles southeast of Chapel Hill.
