Gary Peterson, M.D.

Gary Peterson M.D. is an experienced therapist, speaker and author in the area of the emotional and behavioral effects of trauma. He works with individuals of all ages, couples and families. Among his therapeutic approaches are cognitive behavior therapy, insight oriented psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, parent training, Transactional Analysis, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and energy psychotherapies.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Peterson conducts training and workshops on a variety of topics including the areas of Dissociative Disorders, EMDR and Energy Psychotherapies.

Dr. Peterson is:

  • Board certified in General Psychiatry and Child Psychiatry
  • Member of Editorial Board of the Journal of EMDR Practice and Research
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing International Association ( EMDRIA ) Approved Consultant
  • Past member of the EMDRIA Board of Directors
  • EMDR Regional Coordinator
  • EMDR training facilitator for the EMDR Institute
  • Host for the North Carolina Triangle EMDR Networking Group.
  • ACEP SE Regional Coordinator, Approved Certification Consultant and Diplomate, Comprehensive Energy Psychology
  • Certified in Energy Diagnostics and Treatment Methods and Level II Certified Instructor
  • Faculty for the ISSD Dissociative Disorders Psychotherapy Training Program
  • Past Member of the Executive Council of the International Society for the Study of Dissociation ( ISSD )
  • Cofounder and past-president of the North Carolina Triangle Society for the Study of Dissociation. 
  • Past advisor to the Child and Adolescent and to the Psychiatric Systems Interface (Dissociative) Disorders Work Group for the American Psychiatric Association Task Force on DSM-IV.

Brenda Gunnels, M.A., B.A.

Brenda Gunnels has an M.A. in School Counseling, and a B.A. in Early Childhood Education. She is a Certified Facilitator for Becoming a Love and Logic Parent®, a practical and entertaining parenting program. Ms. Gunnels has 23 years of parenting experience, and is a Parent Educator and Counselor, specializing in facilitating Becoming a Love and Logic Parent® courses and providing counseling services for children, teens and their parents.

Ms. Gunnels’ experience includes:.

  • Teacher for young children in a day care setting
  • Coordinator of the “Goodbye Cinderella Program,” an adolescent treatment program for at-risk girls offered through the Orange County Women’s Center
  • Counselor for Behaviorally Emotionally Handicapped (BEH) and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) adolescents at Wright School Re-Education Center, Durham, N.C.
  • Counselor in private practice at Pathways Center for Counseling and Psychotherapy, Chapel Hill, N.C.
