Family Therapy Video

With Vann Joines, Ph.D.

In this video, Vann Joines, Ph.D., discusses how to work with families in family therapy. He also discusses the helpfulness of thinking about what the “benevolent intent” is behind the family dysfunction. Identifying the benevolent intent helps shift “blame” away from an individual and puts responsibility on the family as a whole for what is going on in the family dynamics. He also discusses the common pitfalls in family therapy and practical exercises to overcome them.

You will learn:

  • Explain the different communication patterns that can exist in families
  • Describe the different levels of functioning in families
  • Explain the “outside in” approach of family therapy
  • Describe an approach to making explicit what is happening to the identified patient
